Celebrating the Life of a VNA Legend: Marceil Lauppe

Few names are as synonymous with Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) or as important to the organization’s history as Marceil Lauppe. Her involvement goes back to VNA’s earliest days. She was one of the first Registered Nurses (RNs) to care for patients in their homes in Douglas County. It was a unique opportunity for an RN like Marceil, as the schedule allowed her to get her kids to school in the morning, and to be there when they came home. She was able to provide compassionate care to her patients and be there for her children, which is a testament to what was most important to her.

Marceil was not only an excellent nurse, but as she would go on to showcase after a decade of caring for patients in their homes, she was a wonderful leader as well. Marceil became VNA’s Executive Director in 1980. During her time as VNA’s Executive Director she became well known for her no-nonsense, practical approach to service. She led VNA through times of challenge and growth. She oversaw multiple office moves, including the transition into VNA’s current home in the Community Health Facility.

After more than 20 years as Executive Director and 33 total years of service to VNA, Marceil retired in 2002. She left behind a strong and enduring legacy. Fittingly, VNA’s Marceil Lauppe Employee of the Year award is named in her honor. She continued to support and engage with VNA over the years, including participating in the organization's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2019 and contributing to a commemorative video. In 2023, she was inducted into the Kansas Home Care & Hospice Association Hall of Fame in recognition of her lasting impact.

Marceil will be deeply missed, and everyone at VNA is forever grateful for her leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment.
